Top 10 Disney World Travel Tips for Families

Planning a trip to Disney World can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially for families. With so much to see and do, it’s easy to feel lost in the magic. But fear not! We have compiled the top 10 travel tips to help your family make the most of your Disney adventure. From planning your itinerary to packing essentials, these tips will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

1. Plan Your Visit During Off-Peak Times

One of the best ways to enjoy Disney World is to visit during off-peak times. This means avoiding major holidays and school vacation periods. email me on davis.steph100@gmail.com for a free, no obligation holiday package quote! You can also make the most of my one to one agenda planning service.

  • Best Times to Visit: Late January to mid-February, mid-April to mid-May, and mid-September to mid-November are generally less crowded.

  • Benefits: Fewer crowds mean shorter wait times for rides and attractions, allowing your family to experience more in a shorter amount of time.

  • However if you are needing to travel in school holidays, none the less your trip will be just as magical and there are plenty of ways to make it work within your budget and help skip the queues!

2. Make Dining Reservations Early

Dining at Disney World can be a magical experience, but it requires some planning.

  • Reservation Timeline: Make dining reservations as early as possible, ideally 60 days before your visit.

  • Popular Restaurants: Character dining experiences, like Chef Mickey's or Cinderella's Royal Table, fill up quickly. We personally love a character dine, so far our Orlando favourite has been Garden Grill breakfast in Epcot.

  • Tip: Use the My Disney Experience app to manage your reservations easily. Don't forget to keep an eye on the app for reservation slots becoming available whilst you are on your trip if you didn't manage to secure your desired time slot.

3. Utilize the My Disney Experience App

The My Disney Experience app is a must-have for any family visiting Disney World.

  • Features: The app allows you to check wait times, show times, view maps, and manage dining reservations.

  • Mobile Ordering: You can also use the app for mobile food ordering, which saves time and reduces waiting in line.

4. Arrive Early

Getting to the parks early can set the tone for your entire day. ROPE DROP!!

  • Why It Matters: Arriving before the park opens gives you a head start on popular attractions.

  • Rope Drop: Be at the entrance for "rope drop," the moment the park opens, to experience rides with minimal wait times. Make a strategy and consider which ride and 2nd ride you want to complete and tick off within the opening hour. If you have young children, this might be the perfect time to meet characters as you'll see queue times the shortest at this time and can get a lot done.

5. Take Advantage of Lightning Lane

Disney's Genie+ service can help you skip the lines for certain attractions.

  • What It Is: For a fee, there is an option that allows you to reserve access to select rides and attractions. If you search on Youtube, StephandRhys under Walt Disney World 2025 trip there is a vlog called Hollywood Studios, day 9 with Mickey Mouse on the cover photo, this teaches you at the start how the new passes work. This was filmed May 2025.

  • Tip: Plan your Lightening Lane selections early in the day to maximize your time. Keep refreshing the app once you have your reservation as people do cancel and you will get access to a more attractive time. As soon as you tap into the ride, book your next one, don't wait to come off of it!!

6. Pack Smart

Packing wisely can make your trip more enjoyable.

  • Essentials: Bring sunscreen, drinks, reusable water bottles, and comfortable shoes.

  • Rain Gear: Florida weather can be unpredictable, so pack ponchos or small umbrellas.

  • Snacks: Having snacks on hand can save time and keep everyone energized.

7. Take Breaks

Disney World can be overwhelming, especially for young children.

  • Rest Periods: Schedule breaks throughout the day to recharge. Some chose to head back to the resort mid day for a swim/rest.

  • Quiet Spots: Find shaded areas or less crowded attractions to relax.

  • Tip: Consider returning to your hotel for a mid-day rest before heading back to the parks however Flordian weather tends to come in mid to late afternoon so bare in mind you might get wet at the parks in the evening, so maybe maximise your morning and early afternoon.

8. Use Rider Switch for Young Kids

If you have little ones who cannot ride certain attractions, Rider Switch is a great option.

  • How It Works: One adult can wait with the child while the other rides. Then, they can switch without waiting in line again. Some rides have a waiting room towards the exit, but always ask the cast memeber at the front of the ride if they have the child swap option and how it works on that ride.

  • Benefit: This allows everyone to enjoy the rides without the stress of managing young children.

9. Capture the Memories

Don’t forget to document your magical moments!

  • PhotoPass: Consider using Disney's PhotoPass service to capture family photos throughout the parks.

  • Personal Photos: Bring a camera or smartphone to take candid shots of your family enjoying the magic.

  • Tip: Set aside time for a family photo in front of Cinderella's Castle.

10. Stay Hydrated and Energized

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in the Florida heat.

  • Water Stations: Refill your water bottles at water fountains or ask for free cups of water at quick-service restaurants.

  • Healthy Snacks: Keep energy levels up with healthy snacks like fruit or granola bars.

  • Tip: Take breaks in air-conditioned areas to cool down and recharge.

Embrace the Magic

With these tips in hand, your family is ready to embark on a magical adventure at Disney World. Remember to stay flexible and enjoy the experience. Each moment spent together is a memory in the making.
